I can't update CA. It says that it can't make a connection to the update server, but the internet is working fine. Are there any known issues?

This depends on what cannot update.
Can you please check which product is not up to date within your Security Center and let me know.

You really need to provide more information
What product are you using?
Have you tried a manual update?
What website does it try to take you to?
Does it give you any error messages when you try to run an update?

Windows Update error 80072efd
If you receive Windows Update error 80072efd while checking for updates, it usually means that a program running on your computer is preventing Windows Update Services (SVCHOST) from accessing the Internet. Programs that might do this include firewalls, anti-spyware software, web accelerators, Internet security or antivirus programs, and proxy servers.
To correct the problem, you might need to add the Windows Update website addresses to the blocking program's exceptions or "allow" list or allow Windows Update Service to connect to the Internet through port 80 and port 443.
To add the Windows Update websites to a firewall exceptions list
Windows Firewall ships with this version of Windows and should already include these sites in the exceptions list. If you use a different firewall, refer to the software publisher's help to see how to add these websites to your firewall exceptions list:
http://*.update.microsoft.com
https://*.update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com
So I have searched high & low in CA to install these sites so the updates can work.Any takers?

Hey bronxtale,
It is most likely your firewall blocking windows updates.
The link below shows how you can configure your firewall to allow windows updates,

Terranigma,
Tried that & something else from Redmond-Doesn't work.Out of the 3 .exe in sys 32 there is only 1 with the name without the .exe.Are these the rules for Vista Home Premium, which by the way blows big time. Then I just tried adding the sites by themselves ,hit ok to add & get a prompt saying to check the address.Crazy, never seen that before.

At least your CA products still works, even if not the way you want them to! I wish you luck. I was using the old 'Vet' A-V since around 1995, and continued on with the brand, when it morphed into the CA brand, but I have finally given up. Its not idiot-proof enough for this idiot.
I admit I was very stupid, I let it expire too long and forgot to update, I added CA Firewall in 2008, and it expired too. I was very stupid, my own fault - I kept putting off updates, or disabling the Firewall etc, mainly because I have often found it clumsy, time-consuming and frustrating to configure or update CA in the past. It was easier to disable/switch off temporarily, eg - to get around the inability to access certain odd websites, or having CA affecting other programs etc.
Last week, I was infested with a bunch of Trojans, so bought new subscriptions for CA Anti-Virus and Firewall, and bought 2009 CA Spyware for the first time as well.
It wouldn't download any of the new 2009 products at first, so I uninstalled all the old versions, and downloaded again from scratch - and still no go. I now have an account profile, with paid up activation codes for all 3 products in 2009 versions, but after about the 5th or 6th attempt I finally noticed that they seem to be 64-bit files? (I have a 32-bit Win-XP system) - I admit I'm not very bright, I must have missed the fine print that the 2009 versions only come in 64-bit.
So no wonder it was telling me it was the "wrong package for my system" - and it then automatically downloads the 32-bit downloader, which wont accept any of the activation codes for the products I have paid for, or sometimes it does accept them - but then the installer just crashes in the middle of the install.
Then I thought it was maybe the malware infection, screwing with it - but FWIW, I was able to clean my system, by paying for a new brand and suite of products, downloaded first time even on the still infected system, installed without a hitch, and cleaned it. With CA, I will just try for a refund if thats even possible, if not, just put it down to experience and move on.
Thanks for listening.
Cheers
